Guidelines for Applicants
Eligibility & Repertoire
The competition is free and open to students 18 and under enrolled in a Third Street class, ensemble, or lessons. Students enrolled in flex-pass lessons are not eligible.
The competition is open to all instruments, including strings, piano, percussion, winds, and voice.
Applicants may only audition on one instrument in any given year but the instrument may be one other than the instrument played in their ensembles or lessons.
Applicants may select one movement from any concerto or other published work for solo instrument or voice and double concertos with standard orchestral accompaniment.
The length of the movement or work must not exceed 15 minutes.
If selected, the piece performed for the audition must be the piece performed for the concert.
Applicants should confirm their musical selection has parts readily available through purchase, loan, or rentals. Selections may not be approved if the rental or purchase fee for those parts is considered an unreasonable expense, or the instrumentation is unavailable or exceptional.
Previous Concerto Competition winners must wait one full year before participating
Preparation and Auditions
An initial video screening audition will be held. Finalists selected from this round will be invited to in-person auditions later in the fall.
For both the auditions and the performance, applicants will be required to play from memory.
Applicants must prepare the entire selection, but the judges may determine what portions of the selected piece will be played during the audition.
Auditions are not open to the public, parents, or instructors.
Accompaniment is required for the final in-person auditions. If securing an accompanist presents financial challenges, Third Street may be able to assist.
Due to scheduling, we are unable to move performance or audition dates.
Winners and Performance
A panel of internal and external judges will select up to 4 winners including a Young Artist Winner for ages 12 and under. Judges reserve the right to select less depending on auditions and other factors.
Several weekly in-person rehearsals will be required leading up to the concerto concert. Additional commitments may also include photography sessions and interviews.
