Teaching Artist - African/Afro-Caribbean Percussion

Position Reports to: Director, Third Street Partners

Schedule: Tuesdays from 2:45pm – 4:15pm

Salary Range:

$51 hour/session

POSITION OVERVIEW:
Music instructor needed for African/Afro-Carribean group classes in a public high school located in the Bronx. The ideal candidate is a dedicated and engaged educator and musician who has 2+ years of experience teaching students from ages 7-10 years old. Classes take place weekly on Tuesdays from 2:45pm – 4:15pm.


Third Street began providing music instruction to public school students in 1959. Today, Third Street partners with 25+ public schools across NYC. The goal of these partnerships is to improve the lives of students through music and dance. Third Street curriculum promotes positive social and emotional outcomes, particularly focusing on body awareness, communication development, community-building, and other executive functioning skills. Using the voice and instruments, students discover their creative abilities in music and improvisation. Third Street also promotes an inclusive classroom, making accommodations where needed, while holding all students to high expectations for achievement and fostering caring teacher-student relationships.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Teach group classes in NYC public schools of ~20 - 25 students (~45 minutes in length)
  • Develop and teach 25+ weeks of curriculum that develop students’ ability to understand basic rhythmic notation, play instruments, enhance music vocabulary, and promote social emotional learning
  • Foster a love of music through the development of artistic expression, song and instrumental exploration
  • Celebrate diverse cultures through music
  • Collaborate on curriculum and scheduling with the assigned site leader and classroom teachers
  • Prepare students for informal or formal performances, depending on school needs
  • Support and encourage students to continue their music education in the future


QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, and EXPECTATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in music performance or music education
  • 2+ years' experience teaching in large group settings, public schools, or community music schools
  • Facility on hand percussion instruments (specifically the Djembe)
  • Attention to punctuality, attendance records, and reports
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with students and classroom teachers
  • Record of ongoing professional development and activity in professional organizations
  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of colleagues, including Third Street faculty and staff members

Trumpet Instructor for Groups & Individual Lessons

Position Reports to: Department Chair

Schedule: Part-time, Monday Afternoons, September to June

Salary Range:

$51 hour and up for instructional time

$32 per hour for meetings and professional development


POSITION OVERVIEW:
Third Street Music School seeks a part-time music instructor to teach weekly individual trumpet lessons and beginner group trumpet classes Monday afternoons and early evenings. The applicant should provide effective and engaging instruction to students from beginning to advance levels, and ages 8 to adults and older adults.


Exhibiting a unique combination of skill, experience, and empathy, faculty at Third Street seek to create a positive, welcoming, nurturing and collegial environment. The ideal candidate is a dedicated music educator and an exceptional brass musician who truly enjoys working with young and old students in a community music school environment. Classes take place weekly throughout the 32-week school year.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Provide effective and sequential music instruction to individual students and beginning group classes
  • Establish a good rapport with families and provide constructive feedback and annual goals for each student
  • Advise and support students and family in other Third Street Music program-related activities
  • Prepare students for performance opportunities within the Third Street music community and external opportunities
  • Attend all studio performances and recitals and participate in department meetings and professional development
  • Engage in the overall work and mission of Third Street and contribute to an inclusive working and learning environment
  • Collaborate with Third Street registrar in scheduling and communication of lessons and classes.


QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, and EXPECTATIONS:

  • A degree or certification in music, music education, or equivalent experience required.
  • 2 years minimum of teaching applied lessons and classes in a private studio, community music school, or public-school setting. Experience teaching small beginning groups preferred.
  • Able to consistently work in-person Monday afternoons and early evenings; Additional teaching opportunities may become available based on scheduling.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in arts education
  • Strong communication skills and effective personal skills for working with young and adult students and families
